Based on the idea of supporting local resources, the Twenty Kilometer Jazz Diet consists of musicians who all reside in the Guelph area. On any given Thursday at manhattans pizza bistro.music clubin Guelph, ON, you could catch any combination of musicians. You never know who will drop in to jam!

All the members of the group are professional musicians who make their living playing and teaching jazz music. Many of them have toured the world playing various music festivals in England, Australia, across the US and Canada. All have attended, graduated or taught at jazz programs in York University, McGill, Humber, Mohawk and University of Toronto.

Local musicians that have played with the group are Ted Warren, Brent Rowan, Jesse Turton, Adam Bowman, Jason Raso, Tyler Wagler, Stephen Zuccala, Jeff Daniels, Tom Hammerton, Ben Jokela, and Joni Nehrita to name just a few.

Tonight’s feature is Jessie Turton.

Bassist Jesse Turton, was born on the Bay of Fundy in Middleton, Nova Scotia. At the age of 14, one year after switching his focus from drums to the bass, he won a scholarship to attend the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston for their 1992 Summer program. While continuing to steep himself in jazz, Turton won the 1993 Galaxie CBC Rising Star Award at MusicFest Canada, entering Humber College with a scholarship the following year. He has played professionally since the age of 15 in jazz, blues, rock, country, and R&B bands in both Canada and the US, and he has appeared on a number of recordings. His preferred instruments are the upright acoustic bass and both fretted and fretless electric bass. Turton presently plays in a number of ensembles and lives in Guelph, Ontario.
