francois jalbert“Jazz pianist, Jérôme Beaulieu is already known for his work with his homonymous trio (Révélation Radio-Canada in 2013-2014). Guitarist François Jalbert is twice the laureate of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix (in 2006 and 2008), in addition to giving his name to a quartet in which there is no chance – Jérôme Beaulieu . The two musicians knew each other for a few years, so it was only a matter of time, or will, before seeing them launch a duo album.

this is a real placeThis Is a Real Place is the result of their first collaboration as a musical couple. On the one hand, we hear the sometimes subtle Americana piano, sometimes aerial, of Beaulieu. On the other, Jalbert offers guitarist forays that spawn with the manouche he likes, but also with bluegrass, finally giving touches that evoke both North American roots music and more modern. Note that this does not stop them from having fun revisiting one of Edvard Grieg’s Norwegian Dances, the only non-original piece on this album, which ends the light foot with a visit to a Saloon-style Snack bar.

Designed, thought and realized in the simplicity (without effects of studio and probably without overprints of instruments), the music of this album quietly nestle in our ear, lazily, offering itself to us without makeup or creaming. And that’s for the best, because they do not need added sugar; the ingredients are of good enough quality that we want, to paraphrase some cooking shows, to respect the product.

There is no need to say, this real place is nice to visit!”
