teri parker quartet
October 28, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Teri Parker is a jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer based in Toronto. She leads her own band, the Teri Parker Quartet, and co-leads the Parker Abbott Trio with pianist Simeon Abbott. Both of these groups play frequently in jazz clubs in Toronto and feature all original music. She is also a member of several other bands including Idioteque (Canada’s finest Radiohead tribute band) and the DeHarms (with singer-songwriter Carlie Howell). As a composer Teri actively writes for her own bands, and in 2015 received a Toronto Arts Council grant to write new music for her quartet, which can be heard on their debut album In the Past, released in fall of 2017.
Teri’s main group is the Teri Parker Quartet and features Allison Au on saxophone, Mark Godfrey on Bass and Mack Longpre on drums. The group has been playing since 2012, developing their sound through years of rehearsing, performing, video/audio demos and resulting in their first full length album In the Past. The band will celebrate the new release with a tour of Ontario; with shows in Toronto (Burdock), Guelph (Manhattan’s) and Ottawa (Brookstreet).
With the Parker Abbott Trio, Teri has released three albums; Gallery in 2011, The Wayfinders in 2014 and Elevation in 2016. Their latest release took them across Canada, performing at clubs and festivals coast to coast, from Hermann’s in Victoria, BC to the Halifax Jazz Festival. Their music has been called “an ethereal wonderland of sound and texture” (Brent Black, Bop-N-Jazz) and take improvisational music into new areas of exploration.
In spring 2014 Teri had the opportunity to study in New York City with world renowned pianists and composers; Aaron Goldberg, Sophia Rosoff and Guillermo Klein. This was made possible when she received the Chalmer’s professional development grant from the Ontario Arts Council. She continued her lessons with Aaron by attending the Roma Summer Jazz Workshop in 2015, where Peter Bernstein and Greg Hutchinson were also on faculty. She has studied with many notable teachers including Fred Hersch as part of the School of Improvised Music Workshop in 2009 and David Braid during her time at the University of Toronto, where she graduated in jazz performance in 2008.
Teri is the primary piano teacher and owner of the Annex Academy of Music which offers students of all ages instruction on piano, guitar, drums and voice. Her students have the opportunity to perform at recitals held at the Tranzac twice a year, local retirement homes and coffee shops in the Annex neighbourhood of Toronto. She successfully prepares students for Royal Conservatory of Music and Ontario Music Teachers Guild exams and encourages students to pursue music they are passionate about. Teri also supply teaches at the Humber Music Community program, is an examiner and adjudicator for the Academy of Music and runs jazz clinics at Clinton Public school, Grant MacEwan and University of Toronto.
